Year 2 - Rio de janeiro
This year, our class names are based upon cities which have held the Olympic Games. Our class name in Year Two, is Rio de Janeiro who held the Olympic Games in 2016. Great Britain came second in the medal table this year, winning a grand total of 27 Gold medals, 23 Silver medals and 17 Bronze medals.
Rio de Janeiro is famous for its Copacabana beaches, Carnivals and also for having one of the most iconic Seven Wonders of the World, the magnificent Christ the Redeemer statue.
We have enjoyed learning about the country of Brazil, discovering what the different colours of the flag symbolise. Green symbolises the rainforests, yellow for the country’s wealth, blue for the sky and the rivers and white for peace. We have also sculptured our very own Christ the redeemer statues, although they weren’t quite 28m wide and 30m tall! We enjoyed learning about the Favelas of Rio de Janeiro discussing how the quality of life varies for people living in these shanty towns. The highlight of learning about our class name has to be learning about the famous Carnivals in Rio de Janeiro. We made our own carnival masks and learnt some samba dancing. We are definitely carnival ready!
